Find the mine
The next morning, after a quick breakfast of pan bread and bacon, we started heading north. I checked the map again and noticed that the small dot that had been Beornâs marker was substantially larger now. My theory was that he might not have actually made it all the way to the mine before and was relying on second-hand knowledge about its actual location. Not that it was a big difference, by my guestimation, the area that weâd have to search to get the exact location of the mine was only about 1 to 2 miles.
I noticed tracks of several large animals, but we didnât run into anything as we walked. I did notice several interesting fruit trees and other plants that had crafting and food potential. Considering how close they were to the region where the mine was, I could tell Iâd be wanting to spend a fair bit of time here, perhaps several trips would be needed to this region. Depending on the quality of the mine, maybe I could make this a routine, come out once or twice a week and harvest materials.
My thoughts were interrupted when we got to the mountain. Weâd been traveling up a gentle slope, but now the base of the mountain had an extreme slope. Climbing it wouldnât be impossible, but a definite challenge.
âDo we have to keep going north?â Dawn asked as she looked up the mountain.
I checked my map, we were at the edge of the area where the mine possibly was, but the circle was as much to the west as it was to the north now. âNo, we should follow the base of the mountain west. Weâre really close.â
We went west, traveling through the thick forest, seeing no paths or signs of development. Then we came to a rise where the land to the west was a good thirty feet higher. The land sloped up steeply, but we could climb it. It was more an annoyance than a true challenge. When we got to the top of the slope the ground leveled out for miles to the west and south. We were now in a large valley that had been hidden from our view by the change in elevation and the thick forest. A couple of hundred yards down the valley I could see a run-down building. I pointed it out to Dawn and we headed that way.
We walked silently when we were near the mine, the mine meant we were also near the kobolds.
As we approached the building, I saw that it was actually a small cluster of buildings. One was a smelter, another a blacksmith shop, and the third which was almost completely destroyed, looked like it had been a cabin. I looked towards the nearby mountain and spotted the mouth of the mine.
I froze as I saw movement at the entrance. We were still in the trees and well-hidden so the guards hadnât spotted us. Dawn, whoâd been further ahead, made her way back to me, frowning.
